Some background info - most of you will have heard of the new breeds of poultry imported into Australia from the UK in 2014 by a small company called Avgen. This was truly a tremendous achievement! The import that took place was a rescue mission to salvage some of the breeds that were left over after the failed ARPIS importation and dismantling of their UK breeding facility. A couple of passionate people with the means and desire took it upon themselves to save what was left, despite substantial financial cost, so that a small number of breeds could still make it here.
The success of the 2014 Avgen importation paves the way for future imports into Australia. All going well, Avgen are hopeful for two more importations of a number of new breeds in 2015 and 2016. However, the future imports are not yet a certainty.
The breeds Avgen imported in 2014 were: • Crèvecoeur – Black
• Derbyshire Red Cap
• Dorking – Dark
• Dutch Bantam – Gold & Yellow
• French Marans – Black Copper & Blue
Copper
• Old English Pheasant Fowl
• Scots Grey
• Sumatra – Black, Blue, Splash
• Croad Langshan – White
• Campine – Silver, Gold & Citrus
Some of these breeds are currently available for sale (Derbyshire Red Cap, Old English Pheasant Fowl, Dutch Bantams and Crèvecoeur) – visit the Avgen page for more details or contact them via email
