I bred some California quails this season, in with king quail mutations, first clutch only 3 fertile, lost one in first week, raised the other two in with the kings , both cocks.
Next clutch hatched 11 California quails and 15 kings, at 4 weeks brooder was getting a bit crowded, so I moved kings to another brooder. Well the California chicks whinged constantly, next morning 7 were dead. Didn't handle being separated, I quickly put 2 kings back in with the California chicks and they quietened down. The 4 are half grown now and doing well. Learnt the hard way about separating them.
