I was at the Auction today with chicks due to hatch...(how bad is that timeing)
DH and master 10 had strict instructions to watch an egg which had started piping in the bater.
I got a call from my DH to say the chick had hatched but the light was blown in the brooder. He said he would look for another one...

When I got home I found my whole bathroom had been turned into a brooder
DH couldn't locate another bulb...so he put the oil heater in the bathroom. Tipped a pedestal fan over sideways and placed it behind the heater to circulate the warm air around the bathroom.
(Don't try that at home kids). A very content fluffy chick happily wondering around his little box with the thermometer in it reading 34C.

At first I thought the thermometer must have accidentally gone into the box with the chick. Then DH poked his head around the corner to "check the temperature" and I realised he must have been trying to get it pretty close to the incubator temp.

All this from a man who a couple of months ago thought it was a waste of power to run a light for a batch of chicks LOL. They do soften

8 chicks

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: My last chick just hatched.... :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Took hours of anxious anticipation. He has webbed outer toes  :hmmm: :aaargh:

I checked the other araucana they all have slight webbing but this one has definate webbing all the way along the autside toe. Is that normal for Araucana?

All the others Araucana/Isa & Phoenix/Australorp don't have it?

I'll get some pics tomorrow when I charge up my camera and they are all fluffy

Toes are joined by a flap of skin like ducks feet. there is a photo somewhere in the gallery I think.

I was about to say I have one as well - but that is my picture above!  It is a recessive genetic defect, so not for showing or breeding. but mine is perfectly happy and healthy.

I think he is going to be called happy feet.... He does a little dance to get his balance when he first stands up, then runs around jumping on all the other chicks
