it is variable but there is a sliding scale as they age. From 37 degrees at day old to no heat at six weeks or fully feathered. If the weather is warm and they are feathering then they are fine in the sun during the day but need some heat at night.

Use the chicken chatter as a guide. All chickens chatter, when they are cold they cry with plaintive chirps, when they are hot their chirps are sullen and they stand with drooped wings and beaks open panting. When they are comfortable they move around chattering happily. There is no rigid heat formula for what is right (on say - day 21) as against day 29.

Thanks for that. I can't remember last time when I took them off heat but I think it was sooner than 6wks.

I guess I will have to watch the feathering.

I would think 6 weeks is a British/ European guide the weather in the tropics seems likely to be a lot milder.

Six weeks is a judgement call based on what the weather, the chicken development and what you see at the time. We can have very mild and warm weather or a real cold session at the drop of a hat in the change of seasons we are approaching. Deal with it on a day to day basis, not a recipe book.
