Got some day old chicks today to put under a broody hen who's eggs failed to hatch a few days ago. unfortunately she had no interest in the chicks and was quite aggressive so after fashioning a homemade brooder as quick as possible I decided to try something that I was certain would fail. I introduced the chicks one at a time to a broody OEG Bantam who already has a 3 1/2 week old chick that she hatched. I thought she would not be interested in the day olds but sure enough as each chick was placed in front of her she guided them under her. I have heard of hens doing this before but have never seen it and never thought that I would. Needless to say my partner and I were amazed. I found it even more of a shock due to the fact that she is only 9 months old and a first time mum. Really made my day and turned a bad situation into a small miracle.

I love it when some thing like that happens and something breaks the rules.

It was amazing to watch, the older chick was a bit pushy with them at first but got over it after a few minutes and happily huddled under her with them.

That's great! Really glad you found a solution :) What a good hen.
