Chicks hatched by hen. They are currently in a nest box on the ground but with straw as the bedding. Is this ok? Have read about splayed legs from this? But it's just what the hen was in when she went broody.

Anything they can get a good grip on (ie any non slippery surface) is fine. So straw should be fine as long as it's stable underfoot.

Some people will say that straw will harbour mites but to be honest any bedding can harbour mites. The main thing with mites is to check and treat broodies for mites.

I use wood shavings because they're a bit finer and easier for little legs and it gives a soft and stable surface.

Pine shavings? Just from a pet shop?

You can get small amounts from pet shops but it's an expensive way to do it. Produce shops will sell much bigger bales of shavings for about $15 a bale. 'Bale' in this context means an oblong block, packed in plastic, and about 60cm x 50cm x 40cm.

Sugar cane mulch is another good option - garden stores/Bunnings will have that.

Yes but definitely cheaper to buy from the produce store a big bale around 20kg would more then likely be a similar price as this small one. I think from memory they are between 10 and 13 Dollars.
