I’m awaiting the hatch of my silkie cross chick, and I’m wondering a few things! The last batch of chicks i hatched were chirping away in their shells awhile before they hatched. This chick has chirped in its shell one time when I made mama hen get up for me to check on it. That was yesterday at lunchtime. It hasn’t chirped since then. Today I got worried and picked it up to listen to it and I heard a little tap tap tapping from inside! How long do you think it will take it to hatch? It hasn’t pipped yet. I really want this one to hatch because I had to give my very sweet rooster away and this will be his chick! So I’m just wondering when this chick will hatch, and is the chick alright considering it hasn’t really made any noise since yesterday!
Thanks
- Gemma

I know it’s really hard but the very best thing you can do is leave the hen and egg alone and let her do the work. Looking at the egg or removing it from the nest won’t help the chick. So do resist that temptation! :)

Chicks do rest, and they need to as well. They are quiet when they’re resting.

Do you know on which date the hen started sitting on this egg?

What Rach said - there's very little you can help by interfering. It can take ages from pip to unzip and if the chick is not strong enough to do this by itself it is unlikely to thrive if you help it. Hopefully it is just not quite ready to exit the egg.
Chicks position themselves in the best way to pip thru the first membrane and into the air cell, moving an egg around when it is under a hen is not a good idea.

I’m not sure of the exact date as she had been on and off broody for a while. But I think it was around the 9th of feb to the 13th of feb.
I’ll leave her alone from now on and hopefully she’ll have a chick next time I check on her!
Thanks! :-D
