Kewpie prices at Cottone's went up a fair bit, unfortunately. Now it's $18 for a 25 kg bag of breeder ration. I will have to check on the other prices when I'm there, next time.

Gehrke Grains on the Warrego Hwy at Hatton Vale/Laidley sells buck grain. Minimum amount is about 200 Kg I think.

I just take my ute along and they'll fill the back with how much grain you want. Then I bucket it into 200 litre feed bins at home.

Last time I went I got corn gradings for about $250 a tonne. Yes it is a bit more fiddling about to get it in bulk and you do need to add a protein source to bring corn (probably about 8% protein) up to 15% needed for layers and add shell grit. But it ends up being less than a third the price of bagged feed.

That's right, Gehrke Grain is a great option of buying cheap grain.

I went down that track of mixing my own feed, as well. But I learned that there's a lot more to put into a balanced diet than corn, wheat, shell grit and a few vitamins. During the last 12 months or so I was fiddling around with ingredients and I'm fairly happy with the mix I eventually got. But at that stage, buying excellent quality feed was even slightly cheaper than my own mix with all the additives and I still had the labour! Now, as Kewpie got dearer it's roughly the same price as my own mix - until the prices at Gehrke's go up, as well (and they most likely will).
On the plus side my own mix is fresher, the birds like it better than pre mixed feed and I don't have to worry if it's available at the feed shed when I need it. But it's definitely not cheaper and a hell lot of extra work.

I know that this doesn't really belong here and I hope that one of the mods can split it up for me should this post lead into a discussion about feeding. I just had to add that.

Gold Coast - my usual supplier

Nerang Stockfeed
Hildon Court
Nerang 4211

Prices as of yesterday:

Riverina Laying Pellets - I really prefer them - pellet size suitable for smaller birds - $13/20kg bag

Riverina Coarse Mixed Grain - varies per 20kg bag - usually pay $24.50/20kg but has been up to $4 cheaper at times - they pass on any seasonal price fluctuations. Only $20 yesterday. Whole grain, no cracked grain, no added molasses - doubles for seed sowing of standing sprouts and fodder. Makes a good rattle in a bucket to play Pied Piper!

Commercial layers - Bond - brown and black only (decline to stock white)
day old chicks chicks $7.50 each;
point of lay pullets $16.50 each

Brookfield Produce, in the western suburbs of Bris for almost everything, and they are really helpful as well.

I buy Red Hen chickstarter (antibiotic etc free) for my quails from Gary and Meta Cooke, and pick it up from Upper Kedron, which is very close to me.

This thread was very useful while it was fresh.

Similar reference threads for other regions may be worthwhile being established or updated as after all we all need to feed our poultry. :-)

To update this one from my experience this week.

The first-listed business: Mudgeeraba Stockfeed
has ceased to trade as of late January 2014. The handwritten notice I found on the door read simply "closed for good". It was a bit of a shock to me when I called there.

Current prices at Nerang Stockfeed for the products I generally order are as follows.Bag weights, unless otherwise noted are 20kg.
  • Riverina Coarse grain mix - 20 kg bag - occasionally as low as $22.50
    I have switched to a
  • layer pellet from a Dubbo mill (will insert details from bag later) the last 2 months after the Riverina Red label went from $13 to $14.50 last month and the cheaper alternative became available @ $13/bag.
    Pollard: $16

I need to gather up some recent receipts for
  • shellgrit and
  • Hysorb to add those. From memory the 25kg shellgrit was close to $30/bag and the Hysorb bales in the $16-$18 range, when it is available.
AS the store now has a website, the cost of other products is probably available on request.

Just caught up with this thread, and thought I'd add to it.

The Hobby Farm Supplies at Morayfield seems to have closed (November 2011), and the website is inaccessible.

For a great produce agency on the northside, try Betta Produce on the Eastern Service Road at Burpengary. I buy all my feed there. Nothing is too much trouble, they have a good range, and they'll try to get stock in for you if they haven't got it in stock. Great customer service also. And they can get in the big bulk bags of rice hulls for bedding, too, if you need them.

Cheers, Onyx
