Cool!

What kind of upper surface are you thinking about for the run (I guess that is there the rocks are...?)?

oops..no...

the run is the left hand side against the fence...approx 500mm high by 900mmm wide. Will be covered with 15mm square mesh on removable panels. The joins between the panels will have holes for trees to grow thru.

The stones will be covered in a concrete slab. Its on the south side of the house and gets no sun most of the year. Even the weeds struggle to grow.

The wall height is close to 500mm, plus the mesh will be 'angled' back to the fence giving a bit more height. Fruit trees will have a mesh ring around them as well.

Lavender, wormwood and Tansy to go along the garden bed. Potato vine is being trained across the coop itself....

Hi Rach,

Duo plantings (1 ea) of : pink lady/gala apples, brown turkey/genoa figs and santa rosa/mariposa plums in the boxes and tansy (6), wormwood (6), peppermint (1), lavender (6) and rosemary (6) in the garden bed in front. There is also a choko and 2 potato vines on the side of the garden shed.

Once the run is covered and auto door installed, the chooks finally get some freedom :)

Cheers

Greg

Every time I log back in to see whats been going on, and give an update of how my coop is progressing, I am amazed at how much time passes - how much people have achieved and how little I've done :-(

I'm not sure the appropriate emoticon here... :wee chasing the kids... :nail: too many unfinished projects.... :aaargh: running in circles .... :help:

Anyway! My progress since planting fruit trees in the chicken run... framework and wire for espaliering of said fruit trees was completed on the weekend. They are growing quickly now and need tie'ing back while they are still soft and supple.

Planted lavender, tansy and artemisia along the front. More artemisia and peppermint in the actual run itself. Next job is to build the timber frame and chicken wire to enclose the base around the fruit trees. Hopefully another 6 months or so the trees/shrubs will be big enough to withstand a flock of hens (currently 5, plans for 10).

Otherwise the coop itself has been self sustaining - feed hopper is topped up once a year (no pests so far) never had to give them water (needed to clean the lubing cups a couple times) and the deep litter is working an absolute treat. Will probably put some lubing cups in the run itself to minimize that maintenance requirement.

Oh, and I picked up a branch mulcher free (now repaired) and now practically everything green goes to the chooks

Fantastic. So nice when a system works that smoothly and with so little maintenance (unfortunately I’m not speaking from personal experience, hehe!).
