Never thought of feeding potato to hens, don't usually feed scraps of any kind, I just stick with traditional feed, Lauckes or whatever.

Now have over-supply, like bags, of spuds, and gave a few chooks some leftovers of mashed potato. Predictably they went mad over it, so I'm cooking a huge pot-full for the lot. Intend to mix half/half with fine-crushed grains as a mash. With a slosh of Anitone for vitamin-mineral supplement.

Any wisdom on feeding boiled potato as part of the ration (mostly without skin)? I have some memory of reading that potato skin is not good, (though that could just relate to the toxin in green potato which is not on the menu for people or chooks).

green potato is toxic! but other potato is fine.

you are most sensible in your approach to birds and i cannot imagine you overfeeding them a ration instead o their balanced diet, so just be sure be sure your stored potatoes are away from light so they o not go green ")

I often feed my chooks cull potatoes, cooked whole, with no problems. They are nearly all carbohydrate so I compensate with more protein.
Storey ("Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks") says that ducks can be raised successfully on a potato-based diet.

Goodo, thanks both. The ground lupins are high protein, so that should balance it.
