is there a natural stray,
that you can make up, to kill the grass around the chook run, without killing the chooks??

You want to kill grass, put your chooks on it! They'll reduce it to a barren wasteland in no time at all ...

I don't let the chooks out in the grass aera until the afternoon, beause I don't want the grass all gone, I let them out for some grass, but when it is to high I find they don't pick at it

Hot warm water is good but if you add rock salt it will be more effective

You are doing a good job mowing, that's all it needs. No harm in a bit of long grass here and there, provides seed for fresh growth, insects butterflies etc. - all good.

Salt is bad for the soil and will leach from where it's used to where it's not wanted. Salinity is one of the major agriculture problems of our country, ask Google.

There's less harm done using a swiper with some weed-killer on it than salt. Or just pour on almost boiling water, not waiting til it cools off. Electric kettle and a long extension-lead from the house. (But that's going to kill worms anyway - and soil needs them for health).

I'm a little confused why you would want to use poisons. Please just mow a little so not too accidentally harm your chooks.

Is it somewhere that you could throw some grain and get the chooks to scratch it out for you?

yes I might try that, have not thought about that

I use scissors on fence line to neaten it up.

Just put olive oil and the grass will go permanently!!
That will kill roots and everything!!

Or you can spray with the chemical like roundup or zero and let it dry. 
As soon as it dries it won't harm the chooks!!
