Just wondering if any one else has had a hen that has suddenly gone off eating grain. She is an old hen and has always loved her grain but now she does not eat it. She free ranges and pick around out side and I try to make sure she gets plenty of scraps which she eats well .She looks and acts well and drinks water ok. Does any one know a reason or had a hen like her?
what would be the best food to feed her now. It would be easy to give it to her as she leaves the coop as soon as I open the gate and the other birds are to busy eating to come out. :?: :?: Thanks.....

What about a wet mash - just layer pellets and hot water?.

Grower is fine for her. If she is still laying don't eat her eggs if the Grower is medicated and make sure she has access to shell grit (if she is laying).
A micro pellet like Lauke Showbird/Breeder would be ideal for her, and the rest of your hens will also do well on it.

I had one going suddenly off grain. She seemed crop bound at first, and I gave her oil and massage. Then her crop felt normal but she still wouldn't eat much. I wondered about an injury in her crop or something.
I took her off any solid food like greens, grain and so on and gave her mash as Sue55 suggests (actually grower's pellets) and electrolyte instead of water. She slowly got better over about 3 weeks and is now back to normal.
Good luck.

hi Fairfield,I currently have a gang of 8 hens that have gone off all chook food and are waiting solely on what my lovebirds and indian ringnecks toss out of their feeders,so tempted to not buy chook food anymore just birdseed seems i'd have no wastage but probably not good enough nutrition wise :hmmm:
