Good morning, can anyone who has used these tell me what pros and cons there are to them? :help:

I bought 2 Osprey rollaways but the hens won't use them. They'd rather just lay on the floor in a corner.
The only hen who would use them was a Sussex when she wanted to sit. I think it was nice and tight for her.
Also they don't have matting, they just have mesh flooring.

I'm looking for a rollaway and would prefer plastic to metal, and would like a larger size with good ventilation.
I don't want to make my own and don't want timber ones.

I would like to attach outside for ease of collecting but want to be sure foxes, crows etc. can't get into the egg tray.

All and any recommendations or feedback would be appreciated.

Essie :th

they rollaway nest boxes are not a very attractive place to lay eggs in from a birds perspective. the floor of the pen is probably softer and easy for them to mould a nest into. Some people add straw in the rollaway nests to make it more attractive, and reduce the amount of straw slowly until there is none, by which time hopefully they are used to laying inside them and will continue to out of habit.

Thanks Andy, I am thinking the same thing.

The only hen I ever found that liked the Osprey rollaways was a Sussex who used them when she wanted to set, presumably because they were a tight fit!

I am going to get a nest box that attaches to the outside wall with a separate small outside door to collect eggs thru. It will have a flat base and I can drape shadecloth strips to give privacy. I think that will work better for me and the hens.

Thanks again,
Essie
