Hi there,

A few of us Canberrans (oh, and surrounding areas like tarago :D ) are looking to formailise our little group a bit and are discussing the idea of a Canberra Backyard Poultry Club.

The aims of the club could be, loosly;

1. To create an informal yet well run, friendly environment for Poultry people to meet and discuss all things feathered, without the focus being on breeding for the showpen alone.
2. To promote the keeping of pure breeds in the main, but open and accepting of people who just love poultry of all kinds.
3. Get practical hands on help with how to keep chooks happy and healthy by actually seeing it done.
4. Share information on different types of chooks, again, by actually having said chooks in the feather so to speak.
5. To be able to share chook stuff, eggs, chicks, gear, roosters, fox traps, brooders etc
6. Help others get into keeping backyard chooks (even roosters in the suburbs).
7. Organise auctions and promotional events (Murrumbatemen Feild days etc)
8. Organise trips to see/buy chookie stuff outside Canberra (ie Sydney Royal show) and poultry transport.

Unlike a pure Poultry Club, this is for those who are of the online community in the main and communicate primarily in that arena, but who want to take things offline as well and get hands on.

We would invisage the club being loosley alligned to such groups as Canberra Organic Gardeners Society (COGS), the Canberra Agricultural Society and the local Poultry Club.

Please register your interest here.

Keep an eye out gfor announcments regarding Gatherings.

Cheers
Raf

Awesome :D I'm in.

Ps. Would we be planning on having a membership list (with emailed announcements sent to the list), fees, office bearers, scheduled meetings etc.? Anyway, the level of formality is something to talk about, along with pros and cons of high versus low formality.

I would be in favour of some formality.

I think it would be important to have formality too.

Im happy to discuss further, perhaps at our first BBQ gathering, at my place (Canberra suburbs) when we have it in the next month or so.

Im chatting to Andy and Zilly about having a BYP hosted site or perhaps a sub forum, so that the members are all contactable electronically and we dont have to reinvent all the wheels. BYP is my poultry community, I dont want to venture far from it. :ugeek:

Please count my daughter and I in. Would be happy to have a meeting in my backyard with afternoon tea as part of the meeting agenda. Know a few other Canberra chookie people too in the suburbs who would be interested.

An inaugural meeting at your place in the next month sounds great, Raf. We could rotate locations - Quince's next and mine after :D

Keeping a strong link to BYP is also an excellent plan.

We shoudl think about our name (at our first meeting) - we might want something that would attract/mean something to people who had not come in via BYP. Edit: Actually, "Canberra Backyard Poultry Club", as per your first post in this thread, would do nicely, IMO :D

Assuming Andy and Zilly are happy for us to use the name, Canberra Backyard Poultry (Group/Org/Assoc/Club) would definately be my choice.

COGS and CQPC both meet on the third Tuesday of each month, so I'd appreciate having Chookies to talk to since I'm now the flippin' Secretary of COGS. Right after I told the other half I wouldn't be volunteering for any positions

I'm in for CBYPC, though I have no chooks yet :) Chook tractor arrives today though!

I'd really enjoy a bimonthly/quarterly gathering on a weekend, regardless of what weeknight meetings we end up having. Whether it's a BBQ at a friend's place or an informal show/sale, I'd love the option to see chook husbandry in action rather than just read it.

I would be interested. Might not be able to make it to many evening meetings though as when I work it is evenings.

What about CASA = Canberra and surrounding areas
