There were no exotic birds sold at Victorian bird sales this year. Not one canary.

The reason was not because of concerns over cruelty or a biosecurity scare. The Victorian government decided to enforce the 1994 Domestic animals act. It is now proposed that the legislation be changed so the government can get a cut of bird sale revenue.

It is true that the sale of native birds and poultry has not been hindered so far. There is however, talk of expanding this legislation and adopting the framework in other states.

This really does effect all bird keepers. I know the birdkeepers who sell at club sales. These are good people.

There is a Facebook group called People Against The Bird Law which you can join to show your support.

There is also currently a petition to sign:

Thanks for reading

There is also Victorian legislation coming along that could wipe out many dog breeders. Like you say these are good people, not puppy farmers or get rich schemers.

I thought it was more pandering to the animal rights/do-gooders/peta brigade. If new legislation bites, there won't be enough pure bred dog sales or exotic bird sales to produce any revenue for government.

I don't see how it will exempt back yard poultry (as distinct from the mass production industries of layers and meat birds). A bird is a bird. An egg is an egg too, and look how effectively a bit of legislation wiped out small free range egg sellers in more than one State (which again was more about the big producers protecting their turf than any "red herring" public health issues).

So yes, agree with signing the petition at least. Saying it only affects them not us isn't right - it will affect all of us if it goes through as stupidly as it has been set in train.

Thanks PossumCorner,
It is true that it is effecting all animal keepers, rabbits, dogs, guinea pigs, not just birds. Clubs that have an annual sale were just not considered when the original law was passed. The law was intended to stop the sale of animals at car boot sales, an intention that most people do support.

Are there any links you've can provide to the actual legislation or policy (so people can make a judgement about it for themselves)?

Sure. The issue with this amendment is that the conditions for obtaining a bird sale permit are just too much for a small bird club too cope with. These are mentioned in section 32, pages 27-36.
