Hi,
Just wondering if any one uses Condy's Crystals in their chooks water any more??
A couple of 'old timers' have mentioned using it in the 'old days' for health and well being of their chooks.

any feedback appreciated.

Hi Shani,
I have used Condies Crystal (Potassium Permanganate) for the last 20 years. I don't think it's THE most valuable help, but it has its uses.

Despite what people seem to think - it does not worm your chickens. It has historically been used for keeping the drinking water clean. There is some truth in the water idea, however the antbacterial qualities disipate very quickly when it goes in. At low dosages it does not hurt your chickens, but at high dosages it can be toxic. If you put it in you just make the water go pink, not dark purple.

I have used it when I have had a respiratory infection in a pen, just in case it helps slow down spread through the water source. It probably doesn't do much, but it doesn't hurt.

Actually, I have found it very useful for getting rid of fungal infections on the skin of people, when pharmacy preparations haven't worked.

Put apple cider vinegar in the water and it does the same job..

ther must be some truth tho that condi crystals does worm chickens
i know ppl with great healthy chickens who swear by it and have been doing it for yrs
if ppl say it does not worm them
then is ther a natural alternative then to worming them
im more into the natural hermedies

Last night, just on dusk as the chooks were all going to bed, I added about half a teaspoon of Condies Crystals per 8 litres bucket of water, then filled the 64 water containers in all the pens! (long job !)
The about 1am this morning as I was reading on the net, I came across this:

so raced out at 6am this morning before the chooks got out of bed and tipped all the treated water out !
THEN decided to ask on here if anyone has personal experience with it... I would have hated to go out and find them all sick or worse, dead!

In the amount I used it, it did make the water quite purple..almost like Ribena..

I guess it's always hard to know.. better make a habit of google searches before new (to me) additives !

Wow! That's a huge amount. Just as well you tipped it out. I use a few crystals - a small pinch in a 10 litre bucket. Cidar Vinegar is a good alternative if you don't want to use cc. I have also used that.

where did you buy it? I thought they had banned it from sale is Oz? although I know you can still get it in Europe. You only need the tiniest pinch- enough to make the water almost clear with the slightest of slight discoloration.

most chemist still stock it.. I think it is 'restricted for sale' in Oz as a direct result of the 9/11 event in USA as it can be used in bomb making.. so can heaps of things though !
