Hi Dennis, back up again after a reinstall grrrr.

I have just taken this pic with the egg tray lifted out to show how the pivots work and how long the side pine pieces are.



i have put a themometer flat on the floor and it is up to 35 deg c after half an hour, will monitor and see how it goes.

I am not the nutter who sits up til 2 in the morning playing with it, I get up at 5 to get ready to leave the house at 6 for an hours drive to work. She is the night owl!!!!

I only mentioned the cold floor as yours reminded me of the set up in mine in some respects, most notably the tray across mid section and I also have a reflector plate just below the lights.

In hindsight the cold floor actually was when I didn't have the reflector plate in place, direct light can sometimes be difficult.

Also the incubator cabinet is about a hundred years old and ex kero or something. I have since found a great hole in it near the bottom. The hole is about 3 inch diameter on the outside (i'd seen that) where a fitting used to be. I thought it didn't go through to the inner cabinet but it does. Not as a big round hole but as a 5mm slot about 6 inches long out of sight under a shelf support.

ouch Dennis that adds up to 7.5 cm square for heat leakage.

The fan in mine is set up to blow directly down to the floor, so I would expect a hot zone down there behind the bottom of the front door.

I am interested in how you have set up your temp logging etc, I work at a aircraft maintenance company and one of our avionics techs is into pic microcontrollers and has offered to help me build a pic based thermostat/thermometer. He also used to have chooks as pets as a kid and is always interested to hear about our birds.

Nice job, it has inspired me to finish mine off.

Blown bulbs might be a problem with on/off or bang thermostats. I have found this is cured by using oven bulbs but they only go up to about 25watts. I have been running two of these for some weeks, one on all the time and another to boost the temperature via an electronic thermostat. It is cheap and nasty but works.

What have you used for the egg tray?

Yes the yellow tray is a commercial one we bought locally.
Trev also made another one with plywood (? looks like it to me anyway)
cut holes out and put dowel pegs to stop the eggs toppling over.
Can try and take a photo if you like.
A friend turned up with over a dozen araucana cross eggs last night for us to set so wish us luck

wotisname there is a guy on ebay uk selling the trays for what seems to be a good price

Hi Terry,
The yellow egg trays are commercial pheasant egg trays that I bought from Incubatorsnmore in Adelaide for about $4.50 each, they also have quail and normal egg size, they have a web site if any one wants the link let me know.
I got them for silkie eggs and hoped that our bantam eggs would fit as well.
The bantam eggs didnt so I made the other tray from pine that i scrounged from an old desk drawer and 6mm dowel, I drilled 25mm holes for the eggs to sit in and rounded off the edges with a emery cloth flapper wheel and spaced the dowels 10 mm wider than the diameter of the bantam eggs.
They are sealed with water based gloss varnish so they dont suck all the humidity out and go mouldy. I got the idea from another guys home made bator.
Hers a pic with the eggs in it, the little brown ones are gold laced wyandotte bantam, the single white is a white leghorn bantam and the "huge" blue ones are the aracuna cross but are only 60g on average compared to the wyandottes that are 32g on average.
