i read these posts and wondered what a electric frypan is if anyone can tell me? as i may want to incubate some eggs next year if i dont get a hen from the 3 eggs my hen is sitting on and incubate half but the incubators cost so much

Im using a sunbean electric frying pan which you can buy for about $50 at kmart. They plug in to the wall and have a thermostate.
People usually use the for frying but a few have used them succesfully as incubators.

are they safe to leave on all the time then seeing as they are used for cooking

Hi read your post with a smile ,cause my earliest memory of hatching chickens was when mum would hatch them in the electric frypan , she would fold a tea towel in half ,sit a saucer of water in the middle and 3 wks later we'd have chickens, that was over 30 years ago and mums still hatching chickens although now she just uses cluckys ,Mums know best IAN

I have revived this old thread. I never really got around to putting eggs in this frypan but what I did do was get it as close to 37.5 degs as I could then taped up the temperature control knob so it wouldn't move. It has sat in the shed all this time .....

Now I have brought it out again. Not to hatch eggs, (or even to fry them), but as a brooder. It sits in a rabbit type hutch and I have filled it with shell grit. It has no lid. The chicks just crawl in under it. It's perfect except you can't see the chickens

good idea dennis------I was wondering how a frypan would go as a hatcher rather than an incubator------any thoughts

I recently successfully incubated some Australorp eggs in a deep fryer, my 2 deep fryers could hold temperatures quite well 98-102 however my frypan could not be as finally tuned,

Basically I filled them with some water and placed a plastic tub with eggs wrapped in cloth inside and a wet sponge and it worked.

I am intrigued by this idea, hatching eggs in the frypan, and am wondering if there is a better way to regulate the heat by slowing the transfer to the eggs? It has been said that people have used sand in their frypan, which seems like a good idea but then I thought maybe water would work better, as per the deep fryer comment, and would allow for a higher humidity without having to fill up so often too. What are peoples thoughts on filling the frypan with water and having the eggs sitting in a takeaway type container? It could be placed on a shelf so that the bottom rests in the water but it doesnt float around.
