Hello everyone, I am new to this site and would appreciate some chookie wisdom when it comes to one of my roosters. My partner is adamant that he is a Red Sussex rooster, and I feel he is a RIR rooster. We hatched him from fertilised eggs we purchased from a local breeder. She is sure that she didn't have RIR at the time. He has yellow legs and beak which would indicate a RIR. He is 8 months old now. I would appreciate anyone's advice or suggestions. Thanks so much.

I have tried posting a pic, unfortunately it didn't happen. I did post one in the Gallery under Sammii31. Will try again here.

He looks closer to a RIR than a sussex to me.

I am unsure if my rooster is a RIR or Red sussex. He came from White sussex pure bred but he has yellow feet and beak. As he was a fertilised egg when I bought him, the breeder cannot 100% confirm that no RIR went into the cage. Could anyone help me out?

I would think something else visited the cage. If your bird came from a pure white sussex he would not have yellow legs even if he was mated with something else. The white leg gene is dominant. The only way that your bird could have yellow legs is if the father was split for yellow legs (w/W).

What were the hens like?

What did the breeder say the eggs would be. Yellow legs = not Sussex. Looks like a crossbred red fowl.

Red Sussex have white legs and he is lacking the neck hackle (from what I can see in the picture) - I would say this is a RIR Cross
