So are there pullet breeding and cockerel breeding strains? I'm asking because there seem to be two colours out there in Brown Leghorns. One is much redder than the other.

Most definitely two strains. The darker of the two is the cockerel breeding line.

Do you know the genetic basis of the difference? Is it an E gene or autosomal red or some such thing?

Yes I think that in Aust cockerel breeders are e+ and pullet breeders eb, although there is discussion that cockerel breeders should be eb with red and black enhancers.

I don't know but pullet breeders look wild type to me so that would be e+. Possibly cockerel breeders are eb then?
