After reading a thread the other day I was wondering if anyone has or is working on Black Crested Ducks? I will be starting this project this season but I haven't seen a full black crested in Australia before, so I was wondering if anyone has made any progress in this breed.

It doesn't sound there are many around. What sort of birds do you have to make a start with? It sounds like a very worthwhile project :)

I have this girl in at the moment with my Cayuga drake. I have the first lot of ducklings due this weekend. I also have white crested ducks. I will see how this cross goes but I think that the brown would be harder to breed out than the white but I don't know much about genetics. What are your thoughts? She is crested it has just been damaged by the drake.

In the first instance, from a colour point of view, I would have used the dark dusky duck above too, if she has the crested gene. You can always test for purity of black (& hidden recessives) later on.

If you do successfully hatch some ducklings from this mating, would be nice to see a photo of them to see how they turn out.

Agree - you can test mate for the dusky gene and recessive white gene later. I'd go ahead as you are planning to do with the duck you have and the black drake. Work on type first and then worry about the recessive genes down the track :)

i think your duck's probably good for type if she has a crest like you suggest.
if your cayuga is pure for black then all the young from this colour hatch should be black,
but some hetro black's do show tell tale signs of the Not pure black state.
it's been some time since discussing crested ducks,,from memory its a deformation of the skull that causes the crest, and the gene responsible in a homo state ends in the death of the unhatched young and mating crested to none crest was advised to max your hatch-ability?
havent kept the breed so will have to do some reading when i can to see if i can find the text to support the above,,if required..

you are correct RnB, it's a lethal gene when homozygous but the extent of the lethal deformity varies as much as crest size does. I broke open an egg that died on hatching once and it's brain was on the outside of the skull. I've also had one hatch that probably shouldn't have. it had the most amazing crest but had a major spine deformity and couldn't stand up.

so yeah hetero crested to hetero crested in theory gives
25% dead through mutant gene
50% crested of varying quality
25% non crested

Here is another picture of her, the one at the back

I chose her over my whites as she has dark legs and bill plus her darker colour. Here is a picture of my drake, its not the best picture but you should get the idea. He is missing some feathers on his chest.

I have ducklings hatching this weekend so I will se how I go.

looks to be a fair amount of bronze/brownish tint on the lower chest, under body area of the drakes, and green tinted bills.
getting drakes to maintain a black coloured bill appears to be tricky and you would like to avoid the bronze colour coming through.

the colour of the drakes reminds me of someone else's hetro blacks from cross breeding of rouen and cayuga,,so will be keen to see if you get an all black hatch

perfection my take a few years to sort out,,but you'll end up with your own designer ducks,,gain valuable knowledge and have a lot of fun along the way..

good luck

Thanks RnBs, I will breed from this mating this year but you are right about the bronze under colour. Next year I will source a pure black drake and cross back to this seasons offspring. With recessive genes coming through later on, what effect will this shave on the black? Have a few ducklings out know but none seem to be crested yet.

The dusky genes shouldn't, in theory, have any effect on black. Even with two doses of dusky, one dose of Extended Black should turn the whole bird black (barring any genes for bibs or white fights). Genes that do affect the expression of black include chocolate and blue - they both have a diluting effect. But you definitely don't have blue and you shouldn't have chocolate (unless the black drake is hiding a single dose of choc...but you'd have to be unlucky for that I reckon).

Because black is so good at hiding things it will actually make it harder to weed out the dusky later via test mating. It black is present you just won't see the dusky.

well she has gone broody and I let her sit, probably not the smartest decision. Eggs are due around Wednesday, hope to get a few little crested babies
