Hi, we are currently building our very first chicken coop and we have already lined up a beautiful sussex rooster. We should have finished the pen by next weekend & will then pick up the roo as the owner is holding on to it for us but needs it gone asap. We won't have chickens until we organise them, hence my question: will he be alright for a week or so by himself or does he need chickens straight away to keep him calm and happy? Our neighbours all have chickens so I'm just a bit worried he may fly off to join them and not want to stay on our chicken-free block. Any thoughts for us?

They do not like to be alone (flock animals), however if your pen is built how would he fly out of it? Is it not enclosed?

He will be fine for a week on his own. I wouldnt let him out of a fully enclosed house, pen or run for the first week anyway. He needs to identify it is as home before you let him out where he can get away.

Thank you - the pen is enclosed but we're planning to let them free range when we're home. I hadn't thought about the fact we should leave him inside until he identified it as home so thank you for that! :)
