Hello. I am new to keeping chickens. Currently I have just 2 Speckledies and 2 light Sussex. They are free ranging happy and friendly- we are in love. Until this week one young Sussex had not started to lay and suddenly we are getting a large greenish egg (the other Sussex lays large double yolkers). She has a little darker top knot - why is she laying olive green eggs?

Thanks - the breeder she came from has ‘Blue Emeralds’ that lay blue / green eggs so I think I have my answer.

Haha Yes even in this part of the world (West Wales, climate like SE Aus coast in a wet year) there is a lot variability in what the breeders seem to call them, now I’ve looked. Also seen called Emerald Sapphires, Emerald/ Araucana hybrids - no consistent appearance either so a mixed bunch. Pretty eggs though.

Hi Clare in Wales, you mention a top knot..... You mean she has something like a crest?

I've got a question for others..... Is it possible to get blue or green eggs from birds without the araucana head features?

Not as much as crest, just a little circle of black grey and white longer feathers just behind the comb. Looks cute - she is called Arwen - means ‘the fair one’ in Welsh - we figure she has a little crown to fit! She is the biggest friendliest and most inquisitive of our girls.

A couple of shots of Arwen a Light Sussex on my phone - raining hard here! I tried to upload a video that shows the head feathers moving but wrong format.

File comment: Arwen at about 16weeks finding the veg patch - the head feathers are just visible I think

Welcome ClareinWales.

Could be a tiny touch of Araucana in her pedigree - or it could be Cream Crested Legbar - but she's lovely whatever, - Arwen makes me think of Lord of the Rings and the beautiful Liv Tyler. And of course Wales makes me think of Dr Who (okay, I'll just go back to self-isolating now).

Thank you PossomCorner. We live in Merlin country so Arwen fits very well. Just took a shot of the chicken puddle outside my back door that shows the difference between her feathers and Bronwen the other Sussex.
