Has anyone had any success using Probiotics? How do you use them and where do you get them?

Hi Rose...here is some info I have come across...I do know that Vetafarm put out a product called "Probiotic" this establishes the gut flora after a course of antis..infections/diarrhoea,stress and is used for all types of animals..retails for $48.50 for 500gr or $89.70 for 1kg..

SPIROMAC - P
Feed Additive for Healthy Poultry

SPIROMAC-P is the answer for healthy poultry! As stated by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, "the overuse of antibiotics makes disease-causing bacteria resistant to antibiotic treatment. Such overuse is widespread in animal agriculture.” Hence, we need to avoid food-born illness from antibiotics-resistant bacteria and produce “antibiotics free chicken" by using “Probiotics.” Thus, SPIROMAC-P comes as a boon not only for farmers but also to consumers alike!
SPIROMAC-P is a unique formulation for use as a feed additive for poultry. It is a blend of unicellular alga Spirulina, several beneficial bacteria and a special strain of yeast. The product is useful in many ways. It helps in establishing friendly bacteria, known as micro flora, in the gut of the birds thus protecting them against the harmful bacteria. Micro flora is also needed in the intestinal tract to process food properly, avoiding secondary infections, such as E. Coli. The effect of Spirulina in the stimulation of immune system is well documented by establishing better cell function, improving the microcirculation and by antioxidant activity.

SPIROMAC-P BENEFITS
The different strains of Lactobacillus and Bacillus sp. help in maintaining the good gut flora
thus preventing the harmful bacteria. Some of the antibacterial products produced by these organisms
are well known. These substances are not antibiotics and do not induce development of resistance in bacteria.

The yeast provides B-Complex vitamins for the birds besides providing digestive enzymes like amylases, proteases, etc.
Rich in amino acids, beta-carotene, phycocyanin, unsaturated fatty acids, and beta gluons that are useful as immune stimulant , detoxificants, etc.

Improvement in health, lesser incidence of disease out break, mortality, and improvement in egg laying in poultry can be seen within 10 days of use.

Inhibits the putrefaction process in bowels and normalizes gastrointestinal microflora.

Protects chicken from pathogenic bacteria, such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, Staphylococus, and E. coli, which cause food borne disease and even death in humans causing millions of dollars in losses in the poultry industry.

Lower F.C.R. (feed conversion ratio) with constant use is a boon for farmers as there will be an increase in the yield. It also improves meat quality.

By using SPIROMAC-P, farmers can completely avoid the use of antibiotics as well as B-Complex supplements that are required after the antibiotic therapy. This comes as a money saver!
DESCRIPTION

It is a grayish green powder with typical odors but not offensive. It is free from pathogenic organisms.

STORAGE
Store in a dark, cool place away from direct sunlight.

EXPIRY
Best before two years from the date of manufacture.

USAGE
Use 250g of Spiromac-P per ton of the feed material .

WARNING Do not use chlorinated water with Spiromac-P. If water is chlorinated, boil and cool water before use. Also do not mix it with hot water or use it with antibiotics.

ORDER
Avoid cheap imitations and order SPIROMAC-P today to produce healthy poultry and protect your poultry flocks from diseases and improve yield and meat quality.

Here are also a couple of other ideas for you to try...
Dehydrated Granulated Garlic is another idea to use...added to feed and grit...

Gut restorer information

Give the whole flock this

To established a balanced flora of the gut/intestine give them this

1 qt (1.2 litres) of dry hen crumbles
1/2 cup yoghurt (plain unsweetened, preferably cultured)
2 qts (2.4 litres) buttermilk

or any sour milk
You can sour milk by adding 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (AVC) to 1 qt (1.2 litres) of milk

making dry milk
1-1/2 cups of powder milk
2 qts (2.4 litres) of water
and mix and add 2 tablespoons of ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar)
Mix well and use for the recipe.

First week
Feed this once a day for a week when they eat it all in 1-2 hrs clean feeders and restock with dry feed

Second week
Feed this mixture to them three times week

Third week
And there after once a week

you will see a remarkable difference in the quality of eggs and health of your chickens.

Your chickens should return to normal, diarrhea should be gone, and the hens should be back to laying

Also make sure they get an adequate amount of oyster shell the Vitamin Supplement will help their body distribute the calcium a lot better.

Eggs are 85% calcium so if they don't get some extra they end up taking it from their bone structure

If you have been feeding them any antibiotics then you should also do this

After they have had the antibiotics and they have stopped - do this

1 gallon (4.55 litres) water
2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar

Just make sure you don't have any medication or vitamins in the water when you give your birds this, it won't work in helping them

Remove all other sources of water, and give this to the birds for a week, let me know if you see an improvement please

Health / Allergy treatment for chickens

Allergies treated with Dong Quai herb

Allergies can be treated with "dong Quai" it is an herb. You will have to find a local herb store and it is usually not costly. A fully grown hen should be given it separately from other hens. Give her 1/8-teaspoon mixed with the vitamin- energy boost below. If she will not eat it you will need to try something different.

If it is a cold you will need to separate her and give her A vitamin boost.

Organic energy and vitamin boost

1/4 teaspoon Celery seed (in the spice isle of any grocer)
a small hand full of alfalfa sprouts (produce isle)
1/8 teaspoon minced fennel (herb store if your grocer doesn't carry it use half as much dried as fresh)
1 clove crushed garlic

For mine that are not eating or will not eat it I use a small food chopper and get it as fine as I can and mix it with honey (2 teaspoons) and oats I can usually get them to eat it if they are eating for not eating sick birds I force feed the first couple of bits then let them rest for 5 minutes then give them more so on and on until they have at least a couple of tablespoons.

Chickens should perk up or show improvement within an hour.

Poultry Pasta Health Salad

Don't fear it isn't for humans

1 pack dried noodles
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
1/4 teaspoon chopped garlic
1/4 teaspoon fennel

Similar to vitamin boost

Cook noodles until tender then

Cut into small pieces, large pieces may stick in their throat

Drain the noodles but leave a little of the water with them and mix with the celery, garlic and fennel

Add a few drops of vegetable oil to stop them from sticking together

Put into a large dish for the birds... they will love it

Hope this gives you some ideas..
cheers
Looloo :)

Thank you Looloo, you have certainly given me lots to work on . There must be something better than antibiotics for every problem. I have sheep as well and I don't drench them any more, haven't for about six years
