Hi guys,
Did have a previous post up that got lost in the wipeout but the chicks are older now, 5/6 weeks old (cant remember exactly!). I have a friend who is interested in the speckled sussex but i am thinking that one is a boy and one is a girl. i am a bit confused though as the one with more feathering on the head is the one i think is a boy :? Anyways, i am thinking the plymouth rock is a girl just by the amount of feathers she has. Please help guys??

The speckled sussex in these pics all look like pullets.

Plymouth Rock should have yellow legs, so may not be ideal for breeding, but otherwise are generally a lovely nature. Looks a bit cockerally by the comb, but looks also like it is a bit of a cross with something else so going just by the comb may not be that reliable. Generally Plymouth rock hens - from my experience have very small, late developing combs.

I have hatched two plymouth rock chicks from eggs before and one was definatly a boy and the other?? still waiting, but i do remember they took FOREVER to feather which makes me think it is a girl. Here is the pic of my previous pr chick at 4 weeks

Yes, leg colour in current one is not good but i am not planning on breeding them as they are too large to have alot of in subirbia. She/he is soooo friendly so i am really hoping that it is a girl so that i can keep her.

Never had speckled sussex and was looking forward to keeping them for egg supply but a friend has been eyeing them off since they sarted to feather so if they are both girls, thy are both gone next week :(

Sigridpitkin,
Does the sussex in the bottom pic seem healthy to you. Maybe it's just the pic but it looks a bit hunchy. Does it seem quieter or stand still a lot?
My cocci radar tweaked when I looked at it, but I have been known to over react before.

Nah, just the angle of the pic. Really hard to get them to keep still for the photos! Very active little guys/gals.

thanks for the concern

Hi Sigrid - my vote is for The Plymouth being a pullet.
especially if it was the one running around the other day when I was at your place.

If it turns out to be a boy let me know, I have a couple of nice pullets coming up,(8 weeks) not show quality - barring is a little indistinct on the primaries.
but nice breeders.

I would be happy to do a swap (again) :D

by the way the boys have settled in nicley, and have found their place in the pecking order

Cheers Raylene

Thanks Raylene,

I am hoping the Plymouth Rock is a girl as she/he is really friendly. Good to know you will do a swap if it is a boy. thats the problem with PR's, it takes forever to tell what sex they are!

Will let you know,

Both the Sussex have gone to my friends place so lets hope we are all correct and they are pullets

Thanks again guys,

Sigrid

with my experience with Rocks..the boys feather up a whole heck of a lot slower than the girls..and they also comb up very fast they have no tail for a long long time..girls get their tail quicker feather up quicker and have no comb..I think the rock is a crossbred boy

Yeh, spec sussex all pullets, and rocks seem to be young cockerals.

Rock - female, speckled sussex are both pics of the same chick as in one it looks male the other female. the close up pic looks male (if the same pic then i would say cockerel
