Orpington

William Cook, the same guy who created the Orpington Chook, created the Orpington duck, and ironically lived near Orpington in the southeast country of Kent- Britain. He created them by blending together the Indian Runner, Rouen, Aylesbury and some even say the Cayuga, then carefully selecting those with the desired characteristics.

Origin- Britain

Colours- The Buff is the only colour to be known to exist. (However, there is a section for Blues in the Standards).

Eggs- Of medium size and are a white or tinted colour.

Comments- A group of well bred Buff Orpingtons is a beautiful sight, especially on lush green grass. When out of a high producing strain, Orpingtons are good layers and beautiful show birds. They are prone to fading, so to keep that beautiful buff colour, they need to be kept out of the midday sun. They are not a beginners breed.

Cost- Good, show quality well produced/bred birds from a very good line can be a fair price, but it varies. If buying for show, be sure to go ‘shopping around’ first to prevent paying high price for poor birds.

History- In England, they were first shown in 1907, then Orpingtons made their appearance in the united states by 1908 at the Madison Square garden show in new York, exhibited by the originator. Today they are bred mainly for exhibition.

Classification- Light Breed

Exhibition- The Orpington Duck is not often seen at shows at all, and therefore making it a really pretty/special sight when you do see one, in my opinion.
Good exhibition Orpingtons usually have the following characteristics; generally a medium sized duck with a long and broad body, with a perfectly straight back, compact and slightly rising tail, and no keel. Their head is fine, oval and narrow, with a bill that is attached rather high on the head, with a nearly straight upper mandible (top line of the beak), reminiscent of its Runner Heritage. The whole body is slightly elevated.
The plumage of both sexes is generally and even, warm shade of red-buff throughout. However the drake also requires a seal brown head and neck.

Selecting Birds- Select breeders/show birds with good colour that is as uniform as possible and has minimum blue or grey shading. Make sure they are true to type and weight also.
Avoid: lacing, baring, pencilling, white brown or blue feathers. Also, strong line over/through the eyes in the duck, and blue or beetle green on any part in the Drake.


Rarity- In Australia, they are not a popular duck at all in any way, shape or form yet, they are slowly becoming more recognised/more polular.

Breeding- Breeding Orpingtons to show standards is a difficult task and hard to master, mainly due to the eye stripes. But for more information, chat to breeders like bushman, gloria, Broken Bird, Tribe of Honk etc…. and I’m sure you will receive more helpful information.

Feeding- Due to them being a medium sized duck, they eat an average amount of food, not as much as Muscovys of course, and more than Mallards and Calls.

Bantams- There are very few breeders creating the Bantam Variety & showing it around Australia, however, it is not yet recognized by the APA.
