I was given 2 young Barnevelders awhile back, they are now about 16 weeks & I think one may be a rooster. It has a bigger comb than the other, much bigger legs (thickness not length), bigger tail feathers; but has never crowed and has no spurs. Could someone please give me a bit of a guide as to whether it is a rooster or not as I am new to chickens (I also have 2 older Australorps that I inherited from someone who couldn;t keep them anymore)
Thanks
Caroline

Caroline,

Welcome to the forum. Your description sounds like a roo but without a picture it is very hard to tell. The fact he isnt crowing yet could just mean he is a late bloomer.

he is only 16 weeks and he may be a while off crowing yet , and cockerals often don't have much by way of spurs till well over 6 months, but it sounds like you have a boy there, would be easier with a photo :) cheers pam

If they are double laced barnies the cockerals look very different to the pullets at 16weeks. Post some pictures or do a search, there are pics here of them.

Thanks for the help!
I have uploaded a picture to the gallery (under Barnevelder Rooster) am not sure whether I have uploaded it correctly as I have never done this before. Hopefully the photo will help someone tell me if my chicken is a rooster
Thanks Caroline

Here's the picture for you Caroline.

The one on the right is a cockerel. At least you got one pullet.
