Hi I have "6 gold legbar pullets" and recently lost my rooster. I have been unable to source one anywhere. I was told I could use a rooster of a different breed?? But can't remember what the breed was, if anyone can help, or knows where I can get a "goldlegbar rooster" I would be very greatful. cheers John

Can't help, I have cream legbar roosters (and no hens yet) - but not for sale. You could try the blue and coloured egg Group, a few people there will have cream legbar chicks available in the coming season. Sets your own plans back half a year but "better than nothing".

In the short term until then why not use a dark-egg rooster like Marans or Welsummer, produce some olive egg layers from your Legbars, they are quite sought after.

Edit to add: Have you contacted Avgen? I've only seen Avgen advertise Gold Legbar trios, but it is probably well worth asking.

Gold Legbars are Brown Leghorn x Barred Rock.
I believe a Brown Leghorn roo crossed with your Legbar hens would give barred males and unbarred female offspring.
Cross the male offspring back to your hens and next generation are all Legbars.
There would be no benefit to introducing Cream Legbars to Gold unless you want blue eggs?

[quote="philthomas"] … unless you want blue eggs? …

Agree, that was my meaning. (As am interim measure until the right Gold rooster came along from somewhere). Because - the large blue egg niche is growing (as against the usually smaller/bantam type size of good colour Araucana eggs). So the demand is there for that purpose.

But crossing 'blue egg' over 'white egg' bird will give half blue and half white egg layingoffspring with no way of knowing which till they start laying?
