Hi All, I would just like to ask what you all think is the best / most accurate thermometer and or hygrometer to buy in Australia for incubating poultry. I have been doing a lot of googling with no luck on the review side of things. I currently am using a few different brands in my 2 Rcom pro’s but they all show different results. I am after very good quality ones that are very accurate especially the hygrometer. My favourite Thermometer at this stage is the Bellsouth R-Com calibration thermometer but my 3 different hygrometers are all over the place. Any help will be much appreciated.

Greatlander sell an excellent calibrated incubator thermometer. Temp accuracy is more important than humidity accuracy.
They are tested/calibrated on site. (+/- 0.1'C) work well in the Suro as the line and probe will go thru the vent and the readout is external.

I haven’t used a hygrometer but as far as a thermometer goes the most accurate ones are mercury thermometers. I’ve used a mercury thermometer and the Bellsouth RCOM calibration thermometer together and the Bellsouth one reads a bit lower. Out of the two I’d say that the mercury one is more likely to be accurate so that’s what I go with. I got the mercury thermometer from Bellsouth. It’s in Fahrenheit though so I had to make myself a conversion table.

What sort of incubator are you using and have you noticed incubation issues/problems?

I am using 2 R-Com 50 pro’s and I am hatching chickens today and all seems to be going well actually. I was a bit concerned because on my last candle the air sac seemed small so I was very worried but they are hatching ok at this stage. I am still going to buy a new hygrometer as mine are all over the place. It is very interesting you said that humidity is not that important. I have a new batch in ( I use one machine to incubate and the other to hatch ) I have humidity set this time on what I think is around 45% where as this last lot I am guessing at about 50 - 55% maybe higher. If you are getting good results then everything is probably just fine

Candling to check air cells is important so it’s great that you are keeping track of that. Getting to know the air cell size you should be seeing at each stage and then adjusting the humidity up and down - I think that’s the best approach, rather than going by the humidity measurement alone. All eggs differ inhow porous they are and in how quickly they lose moisture, so going by the eggs in front of you is the best way IMO.
