I have in the past had purpose built wooden nesting boxes, painted, on legs, front railing that hinges down, everything really nice...which were rejected by the hens in favour of the ground. So I bought some large plastic containers and just cut an opening for the hen to enter, filling them with Hysorb. These were finally acceptable to the hens. This occurred in several of my yards with the hens only using the nests at ground level and rejecting anything higher up or on legs.
Is this normal behaviour? breed specific? or do I just have fussy hens? I am thinking of ripping these unused boxes out which will be a waste but they aren't being used and just gathering dust! :dontknow

I have a hen who prefers a crate outside some days. They pick where they want.

Chickens breed on the ground by nature and in the wild, and old chicken books say to put nesting boxes "near the ground".

Well that answers that problem. Looks like they will all be dumped!
