We are new to raising chicks. Recently brought 3 chicks from school chicks adoption program as my daughter was keen to bring them home.

They are 6 weeks old now. Until now, fed chicken starter feed bought from local pet shop. They are happy with the feed.

Few days ago, i brought peter free range poultry mix from Bigw, they are not at all eating even if they didnt anything for last 10 hours so. Can someone advise why they are not eating and what can i do.

They eat everything else as normal.

At 6 weeks of they it’s best that they are on pullet grower, not layer food. If you get pullet grower in a micropellet form (sold by the Laucke brand) or in a crumble form they should find it more palatable.

They are probably not eating the new food because it looks too different or perhaps the pellets are too big for them. Either way, try to get some pullet grower instead and keep them on that till they’re about 16 weeks old. Then you can go back to the layer food.

Hi San that one from big W is more so a treat for the birds. It does have 15% protein, but I would get a better brand of feed. Try your local produce, for couple bucks more you'll have a whole bag of feed. I feed my chickens a mix of Barastoc Golden Yolk which is pellets and Jenco 18% fine layer mash. The second one is closer to same consistency as the chick starter feed. They may like this more, because it looks similar to first feed given. One of my chooks went on a hunger strike when I tried changing food options.
