Hi,

we have two new chooks that was supposed to be female and now I’m not sure. One Sussex and one Plymouth Rock have had some hackle raising some maybe about pecking order. Not sure with the tailfeathers if they are female can you please help I have included two photos. If you need me to take more please let me know. They are around 3-4 months old.

Im not an expert in those breeds, but they booth look like girls to me. I dont think you need to worry!

I think that they are changing at the moment but maybe approaching laying age. What age do pullets typically start to lay?

they look like girls to me too, both of "heavy" breeds, which means they are bigger birds, and hence take longer to lay. could be up to thirty weeks or more. do not worry too mcuh, when they do lay they should give you years of eggs (with breaks for moulting of course!)

yes the sussex is a pullet but im not sure with the rock,there is a small wattle showing and long drapy tail feathers which could mean a slow maturing cockerel but hey im outnumbered so dont worry im probably wrong lol...beautiful birds by the way,very nice !
