I have always found them very hard to sex. They are fairly well grown before I can separate them. I usually wait for the saddle feathers to show, and it becomes obvious  .

With the strain of columbians I have, they are out of the brooder box before I can tell. When I separate the sexes later when growing them out, often I have an odd cockerel appear in the pullet pen that stays under the radar. I would wait a good 3 months before attempting

Now that you mention feed, I remember first time buying 10Kg of chick starter, thinking this would last...how much can 9 chicks eat??

Now I just order it in the 40Kg bag

yes but try suggesting that to the noodles... i mean, the lovely folk who have been ringing me up and badgering me for weeks to buy them... and of course they all want 3 hens each....

i think i will purposefully wait till they ARE sexable, just so i can ring them all and say, ok, THIS much per PAIR!!

haha, heeheeehee!

i am a nice person really....

:D

ok just to let you all know i have had a development....
the 'Noodle' that was pestering me turns out he actually knows his stuff,
(who'd have thought?)
and has bred these for longer than i care to contemplate. So, he has told me how to sex them from as early as a couple of weeks!
he explained how on the phone and it took me about 2 minutes just looking at them to tell them apart.
The combs on the males are much fatter and broader than the females, the females are flat and relatively thin, the males and wider and more pronounced.
yup. definately. so i have 3 males and 2 hens.... and have sold my first pair to him!
yay!
:D
